Message from Merseyside Police

A recent National Crime Cycle survey showed that over half of the population own a bike. The typical amount spent on bike ranged from £250 - £5000. Bike are typically stored inside the home (34%), in a garage (31%) or in a private shed (22%). Over half of the respondents in the survey have had a bike stolen (57%). Of those, 27% have had two bike stolen; and 4% had 5 or more bike stolen.

The most common place for bikes to be stolen was outside shops (18%), from private sheds (13%) and outside work (11.5%).

Sergeant Keith Burke from Merseyside Police Community Engagement Unit said "Registering a bike with a database provider not only reduces instances of cycle theft but it has also enabled hundreds of cyclists to be reunited with their bikes after they had been stolen. Over 800 searches are made on these data bases each day by the police, retailers and members of the public, making them an essential tool in the fight against cycle crime."
